Expert Panel

To provide Design Review and support and facilitation services MADE relies on its expert panel. The panel of 40 leading experts from the UK and Europe gives MADE unrivalled authority to provide design advice in the region.  The panellists each have at least ten year’s experience in their field.  Expertise includes architecture, urban design, transport planning, regeneration, community engagement, structural engineer, sustainability and landscape design.


Alison Davies

Alison is an architect and partner at Groundworks Architects LLP, Nottingham. The practice’s main areas of expertise include environmental design, community consultation and involvement, disability access and social inclusion. Alison’s particular specialisms include Arts and Regeneration projects and buildings for children. She is also an enabler for CABE and an occasional tutor at the School of Built Environment, University of Nottingham.

Andrew Cameron

Andrew’s experience in transportation and urban design has led to his  involvement in many ground breaking masterplanning and regeneration projects. He has acted as an adviser to Government and is co-author of national and local design guidance, including Places, Streets and Movement, The Urban Design Compendium and Manual for Streets.

Current projects: Andrew is currently working on the writing and research for Manual for Streets 2; a sister document to Manual for Streets that will look at how to humanise busier streets such as high streets and ring roads along with how to tackle roads and the public realm in rural areas.

Andrew Khoury
 
Andrew is founder and managing director of Khoury Architects. He believes high quality and sustainable design is imperative to our built environment. With experience of office, airport, rail, healthcare and residential projects from £40K to £180M value, he has a detailed knowledge of many procurement structures.

Andy Foster 
Andy studied Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds and Architecture at the Universty of Liverpool. Prior to setting up his own practice, Andy Foster Architects, Andy worked for Ove Arup & Partners for 15 years, rising to the position of Director and leading numerous multi-disciplinary building design Teams. Andy has taught and lectured widely and is a member of the North West Design Review panel.

Angus Jamieson

Born in Glasgow, and studied at Mackintosh School of Art and Canterbury
School of Architecture, graduating in 1968. Early years were spent working with Owen Luder, Arne Jacobson, Terry Farrell and Nick Grimshaw. He now runs a small practice in Hereford.

Bob Ghosh

Studied at Leicester and Birmingham Schools of Architecture and was previously a Director at Glenn Howells Architects. He formed Kinetic Architecture, Innovation, Urbanism with John Shakeshaft in 2003 and has enjoyed success in a number of high profile design competitions, including the Warwick Bar scheme for Isis Waterside Regeneration and the new Discovery Centre for Lichfield Cathedral.

Charles Crawford

Charles is a Chartered Landscape Architect and a Director of LDA Design. He has extensive experience of landscape and urban design practice. His work ranges from new developments to the restoration of historic parks and includes visioning and strategy, masterplanning and design, EIA and public enquiries, and implementation on site.

Chris Morland

Christopher is a chartered surveyor and a development and regeneration expert advising public and private sector clients. His expertise lies in strategic development and regeneration delivery, where he advises on the implementing of major projects and initiatives including: feasibility, masterplanning, consultation, procurement, delivery and project management.

Daniel Jang Wong
 
Daniel is an Australian-qualified architect, having worked in the UK since 1996. He is a sole-practitioner based in Bath, and teaches at the University of Bath. He has also been a CABE Enabler since 2005. He sees architecture as a vehicle in expressing the ecological and social sensitivities required of our time. His work is deliberately broad-based, and currently is involved in the education sector, Environment Agency projects and private housing.

Dave Chetwyn
Dave is Director of DJC1 Planning, specialising in planning, heritage, urban design, regeneration, community engagement and training. He is also Chair of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, a UK professional body. Other roles include Chair of Urban Vision North Staffordshire and a CABE enabler. Former roles include Head of Planning Aid England and 17 years in local Government.

Current projects: Dave's current projects include: writing a district-wide design SPD for an LPA; community workshops on planning, heritage and design; producing design case-studies; advising on national planning policy; delivering training on heritage and economic development.

David Rudlin

David manages URBED (Urbanism Environment and Design) and is a planner by training. He started his career with Manchester City Council and joined URBED in 1990. He is the author of a number of research reports and a book ‘Building the 21st Century Home’ for the Architectural Press. David was a member of CABE design review committee and is currently a member of panels in the North West, Sheffield and the North East.

Dominic Chapman

Dominic is an architect and a Partner of John Thompson & Partners. He has
designed a number of award-winning residential and mixed-use schemes for
private developers, housing associations and local authorities in the Midlands and throughout the UK.

Current projects: Dominic is currently working on the Nash Mills development, Hemel Hempstead. This 450 unit and mixed uses scheme includes a new watercourse, new public squares, landscaped spaces and public art. Sustainable initiatives include the harnessing of hydro-power from the new watercourse, green roofs for encouraging ecological bio-diversity, rainwater attenuation and a sustainable drainage systems (SUDS). He is also working on an urban design framework for a strategic site near the A30 at Camborne, Cornwall.

Dominic Papa
Dominic established S333 ten years ago in the Netherlands after working at Terry Farrell and Company and Wiel Arets. He has taught at the Architectural Association, London, since 1997, and is a jury member for the Dutch Jury for European 8, RIBA Housing Group member, and Irish jury for European 9.

Emma Larkinson

Emma is a freelance public art consultant, with experience in developing,  delivering and advocating for the role of artists in shaping the built environment. Her commitment lies in establishing opportunities for creative collabrations across professional teams to bring positive benefits to development and regeneration projects.

Geoff Wright

As Birmingham City Council’s Head of City Centre Planning in the 1990s he was responsible for visioning change through city centre ‘quarter plans’, negotiating major developments e.g. Brindleyplace and the new Bullring. Established Midlands Office for Turley Associates in 2000, now Head of Planning at AIMS Ltd. Regional CABE Representative.

Graham Marshall
Graham has 20 years design, management and policy experience working in complex urban environments. Previously Director of Planning and Design at Liverpool Vision URC, he was responsible for the creation and successful delivery of the city centre Strategic Regeneration Framework. Graham is committed to sustainable ‘placemaking’ through excellence in design and management, influencing projects directly through consultancy, design review and as a CABE enabler.

Graham Smith
Graham is an Associate in the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University and the Joint Centre for Urban Design. He was co-author in 1985 of the seminal text ‘Responsive Environments’. He has advised and researched extensively on urban design issues and developed a number of guidance and policy documents. He is a CABE Space enabler.

Henning Stummel

Henning studied architecture and urban design at the technical universities of Darmstadt (THD), Germany and Zurich (ETHZ). Henning Stummel Architects was set up in 2000. Since that time the practice has won many design prizes, most notably the ‘RIBA London Region Building of the Year 2005’. Stummel has also taught, most recently running a design unit at the University of Cambridge. An elected enabler for CABE and design review panel member for the London Borough of Brent.

Ivor Samuels
Architect and town planner specialising in urban design, town centre Masterplans, design codes and prize-winning housing schemes. Publications include ‘Urban forms: the death and life of the urban block’, ‘What homebuyers want’ (CABE) and ‘Character and identity in housing market renewal’ (CABE and EH). He was Chair of the Joint Centre for Urban Design at Oxford Brookes University.

Joe Holyoak
Joe Holyoak is Director of the MA Urban Design course at Birmingham City
University, an architect and urban designer with his own consultancy, and a Regional Representative in the West Midlands for CABE.

Current projects: Joe is currently working with a group which is planning the Ecohub project, a proposal for dwellings and workspaces close to Birmingham city centre in Digbeth, using the community land trust model.

Julia Kashdan-Brown
Julia is a freelance Architect who studied at the University of Bath. She joined
Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in 1988 and was made partner in 1995. She has developed particular interests in arts related buildings, involvng close liaison with artists and local communities. Low energy and sustainability issues are relevant to all projects with which she is involved.

Kathryn Moore

Professor of Landscape Architecture at Brmingham City University and Past
President of the Landscape Institute, Professor Kathryn Moore has lectured and published extensively on design quality, theory and education. Recent consultancy projects include membership of the team for Martha Schwartz Inc, Living Landmarks Big Lottery Fund project, for Birmingham City Council and creating an urban vision for the Black Country with Lovejoys, Birmingham.

Larry Priest
Founder/ Director of Bryant Priest Newman (formerly Bryant+Priest). Over the last 20 years Larry has been involved with projects in arts buildings, housing, mixed use and regeneration. Collaboration has become a central and important theme of his work and that the essence of the ordinary can be extraordinary.

Les Sparks

Les Sparks OBE is an architect/planner. He was one of the first group of CABE Commissioners appointed in 1999 and chaired the CABE national Panel. During the previous 8 years he was Director of Planning and Architecture at Birmingham City Council. He also served as an English Heritage Commissioner from 2001-08. He currently chairs the CABE/EH Urban Panel and a number of Design Review Panels including CABE Crossrail Panel and the Plymouth and Nottingham City Panels.

Lesley Johnson
Lesley is a Director of Johnson Pancucci, where she specialises in neighbourhood renewal, housing development, consultation and stakeholder engagement. She is skilled in building effective partnerships and advising on the set up and delivery of large scale and complex housing and regeneration schemes.

Current projects: Lesley is currently leading a mixed tenure housing PFI project in London which will provide more than 800 newbuild and refurbished homes, community facilities and public open space.

Martin Stockley
Martin has worked in civil, structural, transport and infrastructure engineering since 1971 in both public and private sectors, with contractors and consultants. He and his design practice (founded in 1997) have a passion for finding ways in which engineering can have a genuinely positive influence on our everyday lives.

Current projects: "We are currently working on a number of key public realm projects across the country including Stratford (London) Town Centre Improvements, Maidstone HIgh Street and Tolworth High Street.  We have also recently been appointed to The V&A's Framework Panel of Structural Engineers."

Matthew Goer
A Director of Associated Architects, Matthew has been responsible for a series of award-winning Birmingham projects including BCU School of Jewellery and Art, The Mailbox and Birmingham Hippodrome. He is currently working on the Bristol Civil Justice Centre for HMCS which has a strong sustainability agenda and is BREEAM Excellent rated.

Current projects: Matthew is currently working with the developers of The Mailbox to draw up proposal for an innovative mixed-use tall building on the former Birmingham Post and Mail site in Birmingham.

Michael Taylor
Michael is Historic Areas Adviser for English Heritage in the West Midlands.
He is a town planner and conservation specialist with some thirty years experience mainly in local government. Prior to joining English Heritage in February 2000 he was conservation officer for Leicester City Council.

Mike Taylor
Mike has recently been appointed as Director of Regeneration for Nottingham
Regeneration Limited. Before this Mike headed up the planning team at Birmingham City Council and was responsible for the planning and implementation of a number of transformation projects including the Bullring Shopping Centre, Brindleyplace, as well as a number of localised regeneration projects.

Noha Nasser
Trained as an architect, Noha is Director of the national Centre for Urban Design Outreach and Skills (CUDOS) at Birmingham City University, developing community-centred urban design solutions and advancing community cohesion. She teaches on the MA Urban Design and is a member of Arts Council West Midlands and the Urban Land Institute in Birmingham. Noha is also Project Director of the CABE Urban Design Summer School 2007-9.

Olaf Kneer
Olaf is director of London-based Mueller Kneer Associates, Architects. The practice has won a number of awards including the AJ Corus ‘40 under 40’. Olaf is member of Newham Design Review Panel, teaches at the Architectural Association and is Director of AA Berlin Laboratory.

Paul Walshe
Paul has qualifications in architecture, landscape architecture and environmental conservation. He established Walshe Associates in 1982, and is a visiting lecturer and external assessor at various Universities. Currently a member of English Heritage Advisory Committee and member of the ICOMOS UK Executive Committee. An adviser for the Heritage Lottery Fund and an enabler for CABE Space.

Paul Watson
Head of Planning Services at Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, overseeing its service which is now one of the best performing in the country. Has practised in local authorities for the last thirty years. President of the Planning Officers Society 2003/2004, and continues to advise DCLG, LGA, English Heritage and CABE.

Phil Jones
Phil has extensive experience in the planning and design of highways and other infrastructure, with particular expertise in traffic analysis and transport planning. He is part of the team that produced ‘Manual for Streets’ for the DfT, a comprehensive guide published in March 2007. Phil specialises in achieving synergy between tranport planning and urban design, with the aim of creating places and spaces that meet aesthetic, social and functional aims.

Current projects: Phil is working with urban designers on a scheme to improve Bexleyheath town centre.  The design is likely to involve the use of shared space techniques, the removal of guardrailing and other clutter and reductions in the areas given over to traffic.

Rob West
Rob West is an architect and urban designer with over 25 years UK and international experience. The focus of Rob’s work is in making places, a particular interest is in thoroughly integrating the design of buildings and public realm. Rob is Senior Associate at Roger Evans Associates Ltd (REAL).

Rosemary Coyne
As Built Environment Policy Manager with Advantage West Midlands, the regional development agency, Rosemary champions investment decisions that seek to create high quality sustainable places that support flourishing communities. Rosemary was previously the Eastside Sustainability Adviser, supporting sustainable development in Birmingham City Centre and before that she worked at the EA on sustainability issues associated with flood defence construction projects.

Current projects: ""The  West Midlands Sustainability Checklist is a tool to help informed decision making for medium to large built environment projects.  It can help inform planning policy definition, support the quality of design and access statements and record the sustainable development qualities of schemes.  I am currently leading a regional review of the Checklist, which was originally launched in 2007.  I am also reviewing the AWM Sustainable Design and Construction Guidance which sets out the requirements of built environment projects that we fund. "

Sandy Greenhill
With distinctions for both architecture and development practices, Sandy has particular expertise in housing, regeneration and urban design. After working with HTA Architects she joined Gardner Stewart Architects in 2000, relocating 5 years later to manage their Birmingham office. She has taken lead roles on numerous masterplanning and regeneration projects. In 2009 she established her own practice, Vivid Architects.

Current projects: Sandy is currently on a maternity break.

Tony Whitehead
Tony has wide experience in private practice, local and central government and as an urban designer. He is also a CABE Enabler for Building Schools for the Future projects in the West Midlands and a member of two Design Panels. Tony’s interests include housing, conservation and regeneration, and urban and sustainable design. 

Current projects: Tony is currently working as an enabler and assessor for the large Wolverhampton Building Schools for the Future project. He is also developing designs for a number of Government projects specifically for the Police Service and Ministry of Defence - applying the principles of World Class Places. Tony is also liaising with other clients in developing design, construction and procurement policy for the public sector. He is also supporting Cabe's Building for Life campaign.

Will Lakin
Will has 17 years experience working in bespoke architecture in England and Hong Kong. He set up his own practice in 2006 and in addition lectures in architecture at Plymouth University, has been a MADE Enabler for West Midlands since 2007 and South West Design Review panel member since 2005. Will Lakin Architects specialise in the design and procurement of bespoke architecture. Current projects range from masterplanning and urban design to carbon neutral houses.

Willie Miller
Willie Miller, principal of WMUD, is an urban designer and chartered planner.
Educated at Glasgow School of Art and the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen, he has 25 years of experience in the UK planning profession working in the public sector as well as private consultancy and academia.
