Diario di Bordo. Using Birmingham public realm

On St George’s day I went along to the celebration in Birmingham Victoria square to listen to the Birmingham Orchestra concert. At the beginning there were few people, but later more arrived wearing England hats and flags and every kind of gadget.

During the celebration, people were distracted by a group of teenagers doing “parkour” in the square. It has a big fountain with steps that, being dry on this occasion, most people were using it to sit on and the children for running and playing in. Instead a group of ten-twelve teenagers started to use it as public open gym, jumping between different boundaries and elements.

They moved orderly, waiting their turn and watching each other doing the exercise. Some of them were jumping on the steps of the fountain, while others decided to jump up the statue located down in the square.
My question was: What does it suggest them to use this place?

Personally I was surprised how they were to do it. I imagined that probably, as “no ball games” advised frequently on street and buildings, soon I could have found a sign indicating “no parkour”.
