Informing school design

fort_dunlop.jpgStudents from Lord Silkin School, Telford, will be informing the design of their new ‘Building Schools for the Future’ premises, with support from MADE, the Education Business Partnership and ConstructionSkills. We organised an architecture tour of Birmingham, which took in Fort Dunlop (where the students were particularly impressed by the toilets and the roof garden) Castle Vale and Bournville.

We looked at the close alignment of contemporary and historic buildings (like Selfridges and St Martin’s Church), and investigated low carbon build at the Eco Office in Summerfield. They are now looking at issues of space and place with an interior designer and design options and model-making with an architect. This is also a good introduction to the new Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment which the school will deliver in 2010.
