| Transforming tarmac into play space |
An exciting and imaginative oasis in the heart of Bentley West – this is head teacher Dee Brigstock’s vision for her primary school. Last term, the school worked on a design to transform tarmac into adventurous play space, with MADE and architect Alison Davies.
The first phase took place over the summer, sparking lots of local interest with people stopping to watch contractors HFN Landscapes complete the work in record time. The transformation was apparent from the very first day of term, with children running around, balancing on the stepping stones, doing headstands along the walls and picnicking on the new wooden stage. at Bentley West Primary School which has started fundraising for new planting. The school has further ambitions and will stat planning the second phase soon. The design work was supported by Advantage West Midlands which funds MADE to promote design excellence and innovation in the region. Alison Davies is part of Groundworks an architects co-operative specialising in community-led projects. She has helped Bentley West explore and agree design options, and provided guidance on planning and procurement issues. |
