Ping! Tecture was a challenge to Architects, Artists and Designers to re-design the table tennis table, as part of the summer of table tennis activities in Birmingham. Participants included Deborah Brogden, Fierce, Joe Holyoak, Leon Sparkes, MAKE, PCPT, and Rekha Nair. ideas included defeating your opponent through mind tricks with tables which used Bridget Riley designs, a submersible bubble for deep-sea playing, and an integrated table/desk for a child's bedroom. Materials were kindly donated by Aurora Graphics, the company behind the graphics at our new space.
Why table tennis?
55 table tennis tables are being left in public sites across Birmingham over the summer, as the city hosts Ping!, a Sport England funded initiative to increase participation in sport.
What interests MADE is how these tables are changing people's use of public spaces - perfect strangers are having conversations, challenging each other to games, chasing ping pong balls along the street, and sitting around eating lunch together. Perhaps every public place should have a ping ping table - or an equivalent intervention - to get communities to interact with each other and bring life back into public spaces.
Play table tennis at MADE

Ping! is created by Sing London, delivered in partnership with the English Table Tennis Association and supported by Sport England.
