The Sustainable Built Environment will explore the relationships between place-making, the design of our built environment and the development of environmentally and socially sustainable communities.
Students are expected to commit 100 study hours to this 10-credit module, with taught sessions from MADE expert panel members Joe Holyoak (Architect and urban designer), Phil Jones (transport planner) and Alison Davies (Architect).
Topics will include de-mystifying sustainable communities, inclusive design, design excellence, transport and connectivity, and an introduction to low-carbon building design. For the final project you will design your own sustainable development.

The Sustainable Built Environment is one of a series of part-time modules, developed by Aston University’s Life-long Learning Centre to deliver the knowledge and skills necessary for an emerging green economy and more sustainable society. Each module can be taken independently or as part of a negotiated award (Certificate HE, Diploma HE, BSc) in Professional Development.. Modules include Social Enterprise, Engaging Communities in Climate Change, Low Carbon Project Management, Strategies for Local Food, and Environmental Auditing, and each is delivered with a third sector or private sector partner.
