Stockholm - October 2008

MADE’s 5th European delegation was to Stockholm to look at two internationally acclaimed eco-neighbourhoods, Hammarby Sjostad and Understenshöjden.  Designed to contrast the two approaches the visit started with an introduction to Hammarby by  Stellan Fryxell of Tengbom Architects, then a tour of the site and visit to the Glashusett education centre on site.  This was followed by a tour of much smaller scale ecovillage at Bjorkhagen and the day finished off with a comparison of the two schemes.

See background to the two schemes here

Ruhr Valley - October 2007

MADE's 2007 delegation was to the Ruhr Area in Germany, looking closely at the post industrial landscape, the design of the public realm and how the area has reinvented itself from a manufacturing to technological based economy, where there are lots of parallels with West Midlands. The trip encompassed a region with examples of innovative town planning, architecture and imaginative re-uses of former sites of heavy industry and waterspace.

Copenhagen - October 2006

Over 30 delegates joined MADE staff on its third delegation to Copenhagen & Malmo in October 2006. The delegation focussed upon housing and sustainable neighbourhoods. Jan Gehl hosted a lively meeting at his office to discuss his innovative view on the design of streets and public space, followed by site visits to Slussenholmen and Orestad developments and a look around the alternative neighbourhood, Christianna. The highlight of the visit was the Bo’01 waterside site in Malmo, a mixed use development that is recognised internationally as an exemplar of sustainable development which left us all feeling very positive and inspired. The feedback from the trip was also positive and affirmed the need for opportunities to consider news ways of working.

The following was taken from an article written by Annie Atkins, who took part in the Berlin Delegation, which appeared on the ACN Website

"For their second successful international delegation the MADE* team took a group of thirty hardened urbanists out to Berlin to see just what has been happening since the wall came down in 1989. The visit spanned three days and was superb in terms of content and organisation. From early in the morning to late at night we were out there looking, listening and asking questions...
