Design Enabling

This MADE service provides support to a range of mainly public organisations. The main focus of work is assisting people who are charged with delivering or procuring new facilities, buildings, public spaces and urban quarters and those involved in setting the policy context for development.

The enabling service matches those who need support to deliver design quality with ‘Enablers’: experienced professionals who can provide knowledge and advice on a wide range of issues. Enabling normally happens at the beginning of the design and development process, often prior to the appointment of a design team, consultants or a developer. The programme’s interest extends from single buildings to masterplans. Enabling focuses upon publicly funded or promoted projects, although on occasion there is involvement with private sector projects. We do not assist teams who are bidding for work, but work alongside the client.

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) have been offering a national enabling service for over five years. Our service draws from the expertise and procedures that have been developed by CABE.

MADE is currently developing and delivering a trial enabling service in the West Midlands Region, within the Designed Environment West Midlands (DEWM) partnership. This trial service focuses on the Black Country. We hope to be able to expand the service to other parts of the region later in 2008.
